SPEF to Help Host 1st Annual Alumni Weekend
On the weekend of July 17, 2008, the Foundation will help host the First Annual South Page Alumni Weekend. The Foundation hopes that this event will showcase South Page's commitment to their alumni and friends and give alumni of all ages an opportunity to revisit the places of their youth and reminisce with friends of old. The Foundation also hopes that the weekend can become an annual event that will help individual classes meet some of the planning difficulties associated with class reunions. The weekend's events are open to anyone who wants to join in on the fun!
The First Annual event will kick off with the Fourth Annual Alumni Golf Event sponsored by the South Page Booster Club at the Shenandoah Country Club on Thursday, July 17, 2008. Registration for the golf and dinner event will begin at noon with tee-off times set for 1 PM. Prizes will be awarded for various high scores and closest shots. All proceeds will benefit the Booster Club.
To register for the golf event, call the
Shenandoah Country Club at (712) 246-3308.
The fun will continue on the on the evening of Friday, July 18, 208, with a concert and BBQ in the College Springs Community Park hosted by the Foundation and the College Springs Fire Department. Food, including McCoy Locker's famous pulled pork sandwiches and corn on the cob, will be served starting at 5:30 PM. New Superintendent Looks to Grow District
by Joy Jones, Superintendent of South Page Schools
As many of you may know, South Page School District has experienced a decline in enrollment over the past several years. This is nothing new to
southwest Iowa or rural America. Each of the schools in the area is facing
the same situation. But, if we are to remain a viable school district, we have to grow our communities. We want to increase our number of students, obviously, but we are also hoping to grow our communities and increase our
taxable valuation.
Here is where your help comes in. South Page is organizing meetings with the mayors of our five little towns, and we could use your expertise, experience and shared values for the South Page District. Many of you have
left our small communities. You have become successful, contributing members of society. What attracted you to your new homes? What changes can we incorporate to help revitalize our corner of the world? Our question to
you is what attractions should we market or add to draw young families to our area?
We are not looking to become a metropolitan area or even a Clarinda or Shenandoah. We just want to be a place that attracts young families that will build their homes and find rural America a fine place to raise their children. We want to attract entrepreneurs that will be self-employed or offer employment to others. What are families looking for? What are the needs of businessmen? Are there service or technical businesses that we can invite to our area on a small public budget?
If you have any thoughts, regardless of how off the wall they may seem, please send an e-mail to jjones@southpageschools.com, call me at (712) 582-3212 or mail a letter to:
Feel free to think way out of the box. I appreciate your input!
SPEF Announces '07 Scholarship Winners
The Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the first annual South Page Education Foundation Graduating Senior and Alumni Scholarships. A scholarship of $500 was established for each category.
Those graduating seniors and alumni who intended to continue their education in the Fall of 2007 were invited to submit a one page resume and up to a one page essay regarding a topic related to South Page Schools. This year's winner of the Graduating Senior Scholarship is Megan Hall. The two co-winners of the Alumni Scholarship are Paige Olson and Joshua Moffit.
- Megan Hall of Coin served as the Senior Class President and as a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Mobile for the past three years. She was active in the student council, band and National Honor Society, at South Page. She plans to attend Bryan LGH College of Health Science in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she will major in nursing.
- Paige Olson graduated from South Page in 2005. She maintains a 3.54 GPA as she works toward an Associate Degree in Nursing at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
- Joshua Moffit graduated from South Page in 2001. He obtained a B.S. in Aviation Management from Southern Illinois University and plans to attend Westminster Seminary School in Escondido, California to pursue a Masters Degree in Divinity and Historical Theology.
Congratulations to this year's winners and
Thank You to all who applied!
Alumni Database
Communication by and between alumni and friends of South Page and its predecessor schools is essential to our mission. Therefore, if you are interested in sharing your contact information with other alumni and friends of South Page in the form of a viewable alumni database, please send your e-mail address and/or mail address to spfound@southpageschools.com along with your name, the year you graduated (if applicable), and any additional information you may wish to share.
In the near future, we hope to offer to all members and alumni a viewable alumni database organized by class year. The hope is that this database will help old friends reconnect and simplify the organization process for reunions and other class events.
Become a Foundation Member
To become a member, simply fill out the donation sheet on the last page of the newsletter and return it to the Foundation at the address above. Your contribution will go directly toward improving and expanding the educational opportunities and resources at South Page and improving the communication link between its alumni and friends. In return, we expect to send additional newsletters on a semi-annual basis. Better still, your contribution, no matter how big or small, may be tax deductible, as the Foundation is a legally recognized charitable entity. While large contributions are certainly appreciated, small donations and the power of participation alone will go a long way toward providing the level of support that we hope to achieve. For instance, if only 1,000 alumni and friends gave $1 a day for 1,000 days, it would raise $1,000,000 for South Page. For less than the price of a cup of coffee or a soda each day, South Page could have an endowment that could last a lifetime. With 1,500 alumni and thousands of friends and community members, it is not an impossible dream.
